Since the beginning of time, mankind has shown some degree of deficiency in self-mentorship and self-determination. When we talk of self here we are simply talking about us and the relationship we have with others.
People of the Past
Leading people is not an easy task. When we observe great leaders from a distance, all we talk most about is Glory, Fame and Honour that comes along it. Truth be told, leading people is a very complicated thing for an average person and entails endurance and humility. It is a selfless task.
Although we talk about leadership as if it is a course that we take only from school which is actually true in most cases, leadership that is acquired from formal classroom will work mostly with predefined environment that is a perfect ecosystem. Leaders of the old and conquerors of the past did not take formal lessons. They had the guts and worked on instincts.
One has got to be so good in influencing others so much that one blends in just as if it is reflex. This means leadership is a combination what one has been acquired over a good number of years and may also include formal knowledge.
In this our small writ up, we are talking about leadership acquired from experience and that comes to the leader like a reflex. We shall look at four (4) main qualities which if maintained will portray good leadership abilities to the distant observer and nearby follower. But before we do that, let’s find out find out how we find ourselves playing this role. We shall look at it in the simplest way.
Every parent is a leader and exhibits some leadership skills. Whether you like it or not, once you are in control or in charge of one or more people you will surely have to exhibit your ability to manage people. Do all parents go to leadership programs and training? The answer is definitely NO.
Maintaining Focus as a leader
The truth in it all is that we become leader of Ideology and we automatically become governed by principles. This means that a leader in this our scope is not necessarily a consciously leader. He is not a leader by choice nor is he by convincing others to follow him. Great leaders of old including the greatest teacher that ever lived mobilized a large number of people to follow him did not do so by convincing others he did so by revealing The Truth and those who believed pushed it on even after.
Ones values and principles will determine people who buy his ideology thus automatically follow or be around. This means a leader must not have people gathered around but some have distant onlookers and admirers of course. Their followers can do so by learning from their action and reaction. That is why some kids do must often what they see at home. That is, a perfect copy of their guardian or what the learnt from them, consciously or unconsciously.
Another word for leadership is mentorship, guidance, control, teacher and manager. This means we are all leaders in one way or the other. Why can we say so? Because someone somewhere is watching closely to grab something we did or will do that can be of help to them be it good or bad.
Types of leaders
From what we have earlier talked, we can distinguish many type of leaders; Born leaders who are parents and guardians, leaders of churches, leaders of institutions and leaders of groups that we have difficulty to define here. they type of leaders is not our focus here. However it is good to know that which is also is common among all of these people, their up rise or downfall is because of the way they defends and maintains their values or that of the group. Their rise and fall can also be due to new rules that they bring up or break.
Why do leaders lose their followers?
Now to present this matter in a more simple way, we must understand that like-things easily associate with each other. If someone supports an ideology it is because of what it can do, the person will surely stop if it changes or if it does not adapt to what they need. The fall of a leader can be caused by fashion and taste of those who uphold the ideology. It could also be caused by things that are out of the leader’s control.
The four main character traits leadership
In order to maintain your power and authority as leader in a world governed by natural law, one has to possess the some character traits. they include; Unchangeable, Incorruptible, Consistent and Know when it is time to stop.
People follow you because they know you will deliver specific results. They don’t have to worry that you may change your attitude along the way. They believe in you even if they don’t know the principles and values that govern your way of doing things. Basically they just know you will not change. They feel and trust you just like little children trust their parents
People listen to you when they believe you are a person who mean what he/she say and say what he/she means. They know when you say yes you mean yes and stand by it. If you know the law of the Persian and Medes in the book of Daniel in the Bible then you know what we talking about here. No one can convince you to change what you have said. This also means a lot for those who understand.
When you are consistent as a leader your followers will not depart from you. You should be such that one will ask this question in times of worries or problem “what would Mr/Mrs Y do?” and automatically they know the answer.
4. Know when it is time to stop
It takes wisdom to know when to stop. When the expectations from you are too much to handle, don’t put yourself under pressure. Man’s desires are insatiable for as you satisfy a need more demands keep coming in. when it is hard to continue, always remember you need to rest and stop the serving part leadership. One can never be master at all times unless one is the ALMIGHTY.
So always remember there will surely be a time not far from this moment that your words may not be cherished. In these times or when it is coming, do not insist leave the role and what you will be have left for you is Honour and respect from those who followed you,
One should be wondering why the character trait of adaptability not mentioned here. The answer is simple, adaptation means one is defying his own values. For he who knows himself, knows that, he has to do just what he has to do… for no man can satisfy the needs of another man forever.
Adapting for the sake of leading people is dangerous and the consequences can be catastrophic.
